The story behind each drink is one of the most interesting things about a drink - apart from drinking it, of course. It's a way to take a trip back in time using the senses of smell and taste, which are the two main senses that hold our memories. The story behind the creation and evolution of the drink we call rum is quite interesting. Sugar cane was first developed in New Guinea and the process of fermenting it began around 350 BC in India. At that time, of course, these beverages were used mainly for medicinal purposes. In 1400 A.D. when the great explorers began to travel to discover new parts of our world many remote islands began to be explored for the first time in history. Several of them had the ideal climate for the production of sugar cane. Sugar was a very expensive and difficult product to produce at that time.

These islands had sufficient access to water, a necessary product for that time. Unfortunately, as the production of sugar cane required a lot of labour so due to the culture of the time, slaves were used for this purpose. The discovery of the Barbados Islands in the early 1600's was an important step towards rum to gain the popularity it has today. In less than 10 years the baronial owners of the sugar cane plantations in the Barman Islands became some of the richest people in the world. Some rumours of the time referred to rum as the drink that 'kills the devil' because of its strong taste. While the poorer population drank it neat many started mixing it with sugar and other ingredients creating the first rum cocktails. It was then that the drink got its name rum, which it still has today.

In the late 1600s the rum was one of the most popular drinks for New England because of its economical preparation and unfortunately because of the use of slaves. All that would change with the revolution. Conflict between England and America With England's attempt to impose a heavy tax on products from the French secluded islands and also with the independence of America, things changed completely for this new country, Production and ingredients for rum were not so easy anymore. At the same time, more and more immigrants are arriving on the shores of America and moving to the interior of the continent. Most of them come from countries like Ireland and Scotland. So they have no experience in producing rum, as is obvious, but instead they have a lot of experience in grain. Fortunately for them, Central America has quite fertile soils for grain. So unfortunately for rum it has been replaced by grain drinks such as whisky and its popularity is falling more and more. Rum today In modern times rum seems to be getting the attention it deserves again. Not only with the wonderful cocktails that it is the main ingredient in but as a pure spirit drink. It has left behind the dark early days of its creation and today it is the perfect drink for a night out as well as a gathering at home in the summer.
