Red wines and origin

  1. First things first, let's start by learning a few facts about its history.
  2. The origins of red wine can be traced back as early as 6000 BC in Georgia.
  3. The first evidence of a drink fermented from rice and grapes was found in ancient China (around 7000 BC).
  4. According to most studies, the wine culture spread westward because of the Phoenicians. 
  5. They were responsible for establishing city-states along the Mediterranean coast, which is centred around Lebanon today.
  6. The second and first millennia BC also saw the emergence of wine in the Xinjiang region of central Asia in modern China.

Red wines and types

There are eight main types for reds wines:

Merlot: After cabernet sauvignon, merlot is the second most popular variety of red wine. The red wines Merlot are mostly considered the perfect choice for your first wine experience because of their fruity flavours.

Shiraz/Syrah: The Syrah in Europe and Shiraz everywhere else, this variety of red wine has a peppery, spicy and bold flavour that blends with rich fruit flavours such as blackberry.

Malbec: This variety of red wine is considered an easy drinking wine with a deep purple colour with plum or cherry flavours infused with hints of tobacco.

Pinot Noir: Made from pinot noir grapes, pinot noir is the lightest of all red wines and is produced from a variety of red grapes called Pinot Meunier. This variety of red wine has a silky texture and is infused with berry flavours.

Nebbiolo: Nebbiolo is another variety of red wine that is very popular with Italians, it is very acidic and has strong tannins.
